Ariz. Legislature OKs presidential 'birther' bill

The Arizona Legislature gave final approval late Thursday night to a proposal that would require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they are U.S. citizens before their names can appear on the state's ballot. Arizona would become the first state to require such proof if Gov. Jan Brewer signs the measure into law. Republican Rep. Carl Seel of Phoenix, the author of the bill, said the bill wasn't about opposition to Obama. "This bill is about the integrity of our elections," Seel said. Thirteen other states have considered similar proposals this year. The proposals were defeated in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine and Montana. So-called "birthers" contend since the last presidential election that Obama is ineligible to hold the nation's highest elected office because, they argue, he was actually born in Kenya, his father's homeland. What do you think about this law? Is it needed? Could it affect the 2012 election?

  1. i think that this bill might be a good idea because of all the immigrents and stuff coming into america and that way we know that they are american citizens

  2. This bill is a good idea but also stupid. This bill will help with picking out those that are not born in the USA but also that those that are not would even try to become president by lying about where they were born.

  3. I think this bill is a good idea. We have a high immigration rate and people may start to lie about where they were born. I think if you aren't born in the country, you shouldn't be allowed to be the President.

  4. I think this is a suffient idea. Individuals should be able to show proof that they were born in the United States. I am a huge supporter of Obama, and I understand why maybe some are ineasy about his birthplace. To prevent this happening again, proof could be shown. This idea would definitely be good, especially with the increasing amount of diversity coming into the United States.

  5. People will just find a way to come up with a fake birth certificate. I don't think this will affect anything.

  6. I think that it is a good idea to have this bill in place because who knows maybe obama really was born in Kenya...Who knows what he might do to our united states of america.. I'm not real sure about all this stuff but everyone says that he is going to turn our country into a bunch of different races of people and white americans wont even have a chance to do anything. So make him prove it, i don't understand why that is such a big deal.

  7. I think it might be a little to late for this bill. I mean how can you just know be realizing that Obama may or may not have born here. I think it would be a dumb bill and glad that he vetoed the bill.

  8. This bill is a good idea. Canidates should have to provide proof that they are eligable to run for an office. This could also discourage people that would think about lying.

  9. This bill should be passed because it is an absolute joke that some foreign born person could ever hold the highest office in the united statea. This is very needed

  10. good idea i thought that was already a requirement so i don't see the problem with it.

  11. Like Meg said, people could find a way to make fake birth certificates. However, I don't understand why it would be a big deal to prove that you were born in the U.S., it is a requirment to be president of America and it is only right thing to do then because it is the law.

  12. I think that the bill is a great idea. And could play a huge part in the 2012 election. I also think that every state needs to jump on the bandwagon, or maybe even the federal government.

  13. I think this could be a good idea because we don't want some foreign person running our country but I don't think it is absolutely necessary.

  14. I saw that you said the bill was vetoed. However, I believe that this law would be legit. I mean if it's a requirment to be president, it only seems obvious that you should have to prove your a citizen before you start running.

  15. I think people would know whether or not if a person who is running for president is a US citizen or not. I think it is good that the governor vetoed the bill because its just wasting extra money on something we could do without. Our country has gone how many years now without having that bill so why change it now when there are ways to just find out without it.

  17. I'm glad that this bill was vetoed. I think it's dumb because you have to be born in the US to be president. It's already the law. All this bill would have been was a waste of money anyway. Presidents info gets dug up so easily anyway. They are always in the spot light and every aspect of their life if publicized. It hasn't been a problem thus far, so whatever.

  18. I think this is alright because if he is born in Kenya, than he is not a born citizen, so he should not be able to be president. Kinda like Arnold S., he wanted to be president but he wasn't born in the USA.

  19. seeing how the black market can get fake birth certificates, i don't see how this bill is goin to help any and in order to be considered to run for president, you have to be a BORN US CITIZEN anyway. This does conflict with the fact of people can get fake birth certificates. so im not sure on this bill.

  20. I think it's a pretty good idea. People, especailly any person running for a postion in government should have proof. As an Obama supporter, it makes sense where people aren't happy about it, and feel like it was right. So he should even have proof of it. I think this would be a very good idea for our country. We are a very diverse country, so I think it will settle some uneasy things.

  21. I think this bill seems like an okay idea. I mean if you have to be a US citizen already then why not just prove it. It shouldn't be that big of a deal to just verify what has to already be true. I can understand how someone could probably get a fake birth certificate, but don't things like that have a seal or something to know whether it is real or not? I don't think this bill is hurting anything and people not born in the US shouldn't be a US president. Amelia has a very good point when she says that we have a diverse country, this bill could help a lot.

  23. I feel that coming up with this bill was a complete wasste of our governements time and that they could have spent time doing other more important stuff, but I see what they mean by wanting to protect our countries integrity when it comes to the election of the President. Most foreign people would try to run for president and lie that they were actually born in the USA.

  24. This bill is a good idea, but I thought they already had to show proof long before their name is on a ballot. So it doesnt really make sense to me. Anyways it is a great idea to make sure our laws our followed.

  25. I think this bill is good because people need to know who their representative is and they need to know pretty much everything about them if they are going to be leading them and making choices for us. and if we cant trust them and they dont show us everything about their background then that is basically lying right to our faces.

  26. i totally agree with this because what would happen if a non resident ran our country this would be horrible ............
