Minnesota Lightbulb Bill

By 2012, incandescent lightbulbs(regular old fashioned) will be no more. As part of the 2007 Federal Energy Act, these bulbs would no longer be manufactured, in favor of a more energy-effcient fluorescent bulb. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has introduced a bill entitled the, " Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act." The bill seeks to repeal the nationwide phase-out of conventional light bulbs.

Bachmann believes that people should have a choice of what kind of lightbulb they want to use. She believes that energy-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs are harmful due to mercury content and that human created global warming is "voodoo, nonsense, hokum, a hoax."

Electrical and manufacturing companies disagree with Bachmann and say that the mercury content is small and a nonissue. They say the bulbs use so much less energy that mercury emissions are actually reduced.
What do you think? Do you want a choice of lightbulbs? Or should everyone use the fluorescent lightbulb?

  1. I think there should be a choice. I personally hate the fluorescent lightbulb. It is isn't as bright. I don't believe in global warming, and I think that there should be choices and options.

  2. I think that consumers should have a choice as well. Not everyone believes in global warming, they shouldn't have to only use those kinds of bulbs because of it. Personally, we use a mixture of both at my household. I don't really notice a difference. But, some people do. They shouldn't be limited in choice just because the old fashioned light bulbs could potentionally help with global warming. For all we know, it could actually be a hoax. Those old fashioned bulbs have been used for years, it should remain that way.

  3. a light bulb is a light bulb, dont see the big deal. will be cheaper for the consumer cuz they last longer and if they are mass produced they will be cheaper

  4. I think they should just have the choice becaue why change things. It is a good thing to have the more energy efficient bulb but they should still have the choice. People can come up with good and bad about both choices so they might as well just keep both of them so their is no controversy.

  5. I think it is dumb that they are trying to make it so you can only buy one kind of light bulb. Just like Kristen we use both kinds at my house. I have noticed that the older light bulbs are cheaper when you are going to go buy light bulbs. They shouldn't be able to tell you that you can't have certain light bulbs just because it may affect global warming. Not everyone cares about global warming or even believes it. In my opinion I don't see how a light bulb could even make a difference in our global warming situation. They both light up a house, and to me seem like the same brightness. I think we should be able to stay at having choices in what we choose to buy.

  6. I think that consumers should have a choice regarding which light bulbs they prefer. In my home we often use the fluorescent bulbs and I guess they work good. I don't really see why it matters what type of light bulbs are used. So what if there are incandescent light bulbs being used? Some people probably prefer them. I feel that this silly little issue will get blown out of proportion if they start telling us what light bulbs we have to buy. Just let it be.

  7. The government should not tell us what kind of lightbulb to buy! That is WAY to controlling. People can make it their own choice to use whatever lightbulb they want.

  8. The government shouldnt be telling anyone what to buy, also its not a big deal, if they stop making the old lightbulbs, you buy the new one! Why do people have to cry about everything? I wont even use a lightbulb then who cares! THese people should just go home.

  9. I think its mental for them to try making us buy only one kind of light bulb. The thing is, what does it matter? The lightbulb companies would have to produce only one kind of light bulb and they wouldn't be able to make money. And if this passes, the next thing they are going to make us do is buy only one kind of car. Then one kind of house. Then one kind of peanut butter.........

  10. The government has to right to tell us what we can and can not use for a lightbulb. For real people thats just dumb who comes up with this? Why does it matter what kind of lightbulbs use? Yes its more energy efficiant but if people dont want to be that way they why try to make them?

  11. I think that we should have a choice of what kind of lightbulb we use. This place is turning into a communist country more and more everyday.

  12. Yes, it it just a lightbulb but the government shouldn't tell us that we can't use a certain lightbulb. The more the government tells us we can and can't do,the less freedom we are given.

  13. I think their should be a choice. I mean their has not been an issue with it before. And I'm with the companies that there isn't that much mercury in those lightbulbs anyway. So I don't see what's the big deal with choosing what kind of lightbulbs you do or don't use.

  14. I think it is dumb because what if people want cheepees for lights but no one thinks of the poor.its all the rich

  15. i think that we should still be able to chose because there is less recycleable parts in the floresent bulbs so they may use less energy but they are harder to recycle

  16. I think there should be a choice. I know I would want a choice of which lightbulb I could use. Depending on your finances the fluorescent tend to cost more so if you dont have alot of money it could be harder to pay more each time on lightbulbs when you could be spending that money on better things.

  17. I think there should be a choice for people who give a rip of what light bulbs they use. I don't really care what kind of light bulb is in my lamp as long as I can see to do my awesome homework. Haha! We use the more efficient light bulbs in my house but it really doesn't matter to me. Although the flouresent bulbs aren't as good when we are using them in the garage. But I still don't care.

  18. As if! the government is going to tell us what lightbulb we can use? If the bill goes into effect then it's going to create problems. Where is the government going to stop. Someday are they going to tell us what books we can't read? Seriously it's our freedom to own what lightbulb we want!

  19. I think there should be a choice. Honestly, I don't care what light bulbs are used, aslong as there is light. It's just another stupid bill that our government is wasting their money on.

  20. I don't see why it matters what type of lightbulb we use. They both have their pros and cons. Consumers should be able to purchase the type of lightbulb they prefer.

  21. The goverments stupid, we should all be able to buy whatever we want. i think a light bulb is a light bulb.. and what if one saves a little more energry than the other..? how much are you really saving because i bet if you figured it all out it wouldnt add up to be hardly anything.

  22. We should be able to choose our own light bulbs, people shouldn't have to tell you what light bulbs to use. Who cares what kind of light bulb you use its your house. And the new light bulbs they make take forever to turn on. When you turn on the light it's still dark in that room. Unlike the old ones when you turn on the light it's actually light in that room.

  23. i think this is stupid because the goverment shouldn't tell us what kind of lightbulb to use. i think they should find something better to argue about.

  24. i think that they should of just took the old light bulbs off of the shelves without saying anything. nobody whould really notice at all

  25. i like the newer light bulbs they have more efficient and last waaaaaaaaaaaay longer

  26. I believe that people should have the right to choose the kind of bulbs they want to use because they have the freedom to do as they plaese givin to them by the constitution.
