In Rice Lake, Wisconsin 19 year old Romaine Robert Quinn defeated the incumbent mayor 53% to 47%. His main goals were the balancing the budget and working on the sidewalk project.
John Tyler Hammons, 19, was elected to be mayor of Muskogee, OK. The city has a population of 38,000 people and Hammons won 70% of the vote.
Kyle Corbin became the mayor of Union, Oregon when he was just 18. He beat out two other candidates, City Councilor Scott Morrison, 59 and a former city councilor, Dick Middleton, 64. Corbin had to run a write in campaign because as a 17-year-old, when he announced his intent to run, he was too young to be a registered voter and qualify for a spot on the ballot.
Colton Morman is a high school senior and barely eligible to vote, but he was elected mayor of Dawson, Iowa. Morman's grandfather stepped down as Dawson's mayor. Morman said he figured that being the next mayor might be good experience for a future career in law. Mostly, he said, he just wants to help people.
Michael Sessions ran as a write-in candidate because he was too young to get on the ballot. The young politician used $700 from a summer job to fund his door-to-door campaign in Hillsdale, Mich., a town of about 9,000. Sessions, 18, beat former Mayor Doug Ingles, 51, 732 votes to 668 votes.
What do you think about these young mayors?
I think its fine. If they get there job done, do productive things, and are respectable, more power to them, they are setting a good example and goals for even younger kids.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is silly, how can people even trust these young men? I sure don't want some young kid who doesnt know anything about anything more than likely running my town i mean yes its sweet that they are so young and able to do that but not all of them look like they were really in it for the seriousness of it but because they wanted to say that they were in charge and that they were the mayor. I don't know i think it silly. But more power to them.
ReplyDeleteI think if a young fellah wanted that job bad enough, he can have it. It's a big responsibility, and the young lad running must have some sort of backround that shows he is trustworthy. If i were to run for mayor, i would publicly show my good grades and deeds just to get people from the town to say look, the kid's good. I think its cool that the young generation is getting a head start on those kinds of things. I also think it takes a lot of kahoonies to run for office.
ReplyDeletei think that if he wants to run let him run as long as he gets his job done. and does productive things let him do it.
ReplyDeletethat is good to see that there are some young people that are involved. they can do just as good or better than a 50 year old could i would say. they are young but learn easy and also will listen unlike some people that are old and don't see others views
ReplyDeleteI think it's ok, only if they give proper information that they know what their doing and understanding what their getting into. But as me, I would say that I would perfer to have an older mayor because they have more experience and a better understanding of things.
ReplyDeletei think that this is a pretty good thing, because most kids our age are smarter than a 33 year old man. so they know what to do, a leader isn't defined by his or her age, but by what they do
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a good thing, it shows kids that being important when your young isnt that hard. Its showing kids how to be productive.
ReplyDeleteI think it is good that younger people are running for things like them. They can do just as good as older people and in my opinion they are more open minded than older people and it is good that they were elected mayor. It is good to see change.
ReplyDeleteI think that this could do some good. I mean as long as they have a proper campaign and know enough information about what they're doing then why not become mayor.? Having young men as a mayor may sound scary, but I think we are due for a change. The older people that have been running do the same things all the time, for the most part. And currently that's not working. Having a younger view point may create some changes people may not be used to but you never know it could help in the longer run. Why not give them a chance to run?
ReplyDeleteI definately like Dissmore's comment.! Age shouldn't matter.
ReplyDeleteI think that if the person has good ideas, age shouldn't matter. The younger generation might have good ideas that the older generation wouldn't think about or put into action. As long as the mayor can legally and rightfully serve their city age shouldn't matter.
ReplyDeleteI think it's sweet that these people get to be mayors. Although I can understand why someone wouldn't want this just because these teenagers don't have as much experience dealing with problems as an older person would.
ReplyDeleteI think other kids might mook him but he is working but that is cool that he is working and not involved in drugs ganges or other retarted thing others do to be cool. I hope he has fun being the mayor and i hope he concentrates on his work and does not make any stupid screewupss..........
ReplyDeleteI think that having young minds in politics isn't always such a bad idea. They have new ideas that the older guys might not necessarly think of. Also, if they win by popular vote, all the better. They are obviously wanted in politics.
ReplyDeleteI think having a young mayor would be good, they might bring new fresh modern ideas. But I think that they may have gotten the vote just because they are young and not their ideas or campaign. But also people might like the door to door technique the younger people used better than big meetings and convention type deals.
ReplyDeleteI think young politicians can be a good idea, they probably might have new ideas for politics. I don't think it is the age of someone that matters in politics, it is what they stand for.
ReplyDeleteI think this is refreshing! It seems like older individuals in society often think teens don't have the capability, knowledge, or experience to help a town run smoothly. While lacking in experience, teens do have modern spins on conflicts and can become mayor successfully. I don't think age should be a large factor when debating who could be a better mayor. It is all about their decisions and how they choose to run the area. I think those individuals got the votes because it is a different spin on politics. I think that they most likely do have the capability and knowledge to be successful, despite their age.
ReplyDeletei dont see anything wrong with them being young i mean some of the brightest people in the country and around the world are young
ReplyDeleteI think it is ok for them to be mayor. Yes people will have spectulations and probably not want them considering their age and knowing how some people are irresponsible at those ages. But if they are willing to put in all the time and try to become mayor they obviously are responsible and will do a good job. I think it is a good thing young people are getting involved.
ReplyDeletei think young mayors have great potential in to doing the right thing. but they dont always have the experience that the older guys do. but young people are the future of us so why not let them get involved and learn about what needs to be done. there are people out there that deserve to be one just as much as an older person
ReplyDeleteI think it's sweet that we are getting some fresh blood in these towns. I think it's pretty cool that 18-19 year olds can beat out the 50-60 year olds. I think it's good to get some new ideas and new approaches on things. Some young people are prepared for what is happening in the world and have great ideas on how to help out what needs it. I'm definitely not saying that every young person running for mayor is prepared for what is ahead of them. But it's awesome for these kids!
ReplyDeleteI think this is kind of cool. I think it's a good thing we're getting our generation into politics. They can bring new ideas and views that us younger generation have. These kids have obviously done their research and have strong views on what they think should be done. We need more present, and young kids that are knowledgeable to get their views out there.
ReplyDeleteI think it is perfectly acceptable for a 18-19 year old to be mayor. They went through the work of campaigning, which indicates that they want to help their community. They should be able to perform their job if they were elected. If not, it's the voters' fault.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's fine. Us teenagers these days have learned more about the government and politics more than any other teenagers out there. So I think that they have the smarts and intellect to do it. If they want to do it they should be able too. I think they can do us good and maybe bring peace to this country.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is cool for them to run for mayors and that they want to help their communities. It is about time that the old fashioned city councils get a young mind on their board to help keep up with the times.
ReplyDeletenow lets see how old they look after their mayor ship
ReplyDeletei think that it is a good idea to let young 17 to 19 year old's to run for mayor i mean that is awesome lol
I say that its good to have young people getting more involved in their community. We have all been told to dream big. They just made their dreams come true that's all. Age should not matter. Its a great thing to have more people our age getting involved.
ReplyDeleteI think that it has both its up sides and down sides. For instance it is a good thing because it brings something new to the table and a lot of times young kids can come up with really good ideas compared to older people. It is also not good because these kids don't even have the experience of being out on there own for more than 2 or 3 years how can they lead a town or state?
