Minnesota Cheeseburger Bill??

Republican Representative Dean Urdahl of Grove City, Mn introduced a bill that has been called the "cheeseburger bill." The formal name for the bill is "Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act." If passed, it would prohibit people who gain weight from suing food sellers and makers. It means you can't sue McDonalds if you get fat from eating their food.

There is debate about the need for such a bill. Minnesota has never had a lawsuit against a company over weight gain. Some think it is not an issue. Others say current law already prohibits such lawsuits.

Those in favor of the law say that other states have had such lawsuits and Minnesota could in the future. Others say the bill is needed to stop frivolous lawsuits which cost taxpayers and raises the prices of goods.

This bill has passed the Mn House of Representatives. It is moving through the Mn Senate and it is unclear whether or not it will pass or whether the governor will sign it.

What do you think?

  1. I actually think this is a legit bill. People shouldn't sue fast food restaurants just because they got fat. It's their fault that they ate there anyways. They should know how the food will affect them. I think it should pass through the Senate and the Governor. The lawsuits need to be stopped. When people sue all they are doing is wasting their own money.

  2. I think it is a good bill to try to pass. People are wasting money for many people and companies for something that is their own fault. The restaurants are just supplying the food, they aren't forcing people to eat the food and get fat. It is ridiculous that they would try and try and sue in the first place. I think they should pass this bill.

  3. This is a good bill. Most people (unless they have an issue) know that if you continously eat excess amounts of unhealthy foods you will [most likely] gain weight. Resteraunts don't force their customers to eat at their places. So if a person gets fat because of eating at the resteraunt. It is NOT the resteraunts fault.

  4. I definitely agree that this bill should be past. It's kinda dumb how people think they could even win a lawsuit like this. I mean just because the restaurant promotes their food, it doesn't mean that it is their fault that whoever ate the food is fat. Also if other states have this law why shouldn't we, this way if an issue like this comes up we won't have to deal with it, there will already be a solution. I do think this bill should pass, it sounds like a decently good idea.

  5. I agree with the bill because whoever eats at those places should know that those places are not healthy for you. The people should not even eat there if they are fat or getting fat. They should try to eat healthier to lose weight, and not have any trouble with weight in the future.

  6. I agree with that the bill needs to be past. Its not the restaurants faults if you get fat eating their food. Its not like they are making you buy it or eat it. you make the chose to eat it. Its your fault.

  7. I think a bill should be past. if you get fat, good for you!! The only way you should be able to sue a restaurant is if they find out there was actually something wrong with the food you ate, someone hits you in the face, or you find somethin nasty in there, which shouldnt happen.

  8. I think that its a pretty good thing to do that but it seems like its not even needed because people would just have to be stupid if they didn't understand that food makes you gain weight. But it would be good just in case someone did try to sue because of that.

  9. I think its a good idea because people that eat at the places that arent the healthest for you know what they are eating, an should know that there not going to lose any weight and may gain some if anything by eating unhealthy food.

  10. I think that this bill is ridiculous for one eating that junk is clearly going to make you gain weight not help you lose it. In the reading it said that no one has done this in MN (sueing because they got fat.) Its so stupid that people can really do that because who thinks that eating a cheese burger from McDonalds is going to be healthy for you? The bill should be passed i guess if McDonalds is really worried about people sueing them.

  11. i think it is a good idea because people who eat at those places know what they are getting and they know it is not healthy for them that is why they should pass the bill.

  12. This bill should be allowed to pass. Even though some people may think that no one will sue a fast food chain of restaraunt they will still try to sue them becuase the blame the place for making them fat, even though it was their own fault that they consumed some much of the fast food and still the person could have taken precautions, like exercising on a daily basis, that would not let them gain weight.

  13. unique law. yea should go through even tho it would ruin my way of getting rich haha. people that get fat from the resturant do it on their own will so they cant sue them i would have to say

  14. I agree with this bill, and they should go through with it because although there hasn't been any cases yet. There are some that have sued companies when it's your own fault for eating there.

  16. this bill is a bit rediculious. it is kinda sad that we need a bill like this. people are just pathetic when they sue mcdonalds. sueing a big company will not make you skinny, it is just giving you money to buy more food. this is just rediculous

  17. I think this bill is a decent idea but the idea that we actually need a bill like this! It's kinda a bit crazy and ridiculous. This just goes to show what type of country we live in. It all comes down to the choices we make as individuals. If you don't want to get fat, don't eat at McDonald's every single day and if you decided to eat there a lot, don't blame them for the weight you gain. But, I guess this bill will still help in a way.

  18. This is one of very few bills that I actually understand so thats a plus. It should definintely go through because I wanna see the fat kids cry when they end up getting laughed out of the courtroom for trying to sue for their fatness.

  19. i totally agree that it should be passed. if people didnt want to gain weight they should eat there. its not like they are being forced to eat the harmful fatty food. its ridiculous that we need this bill, but it is necessary.

  22. This bill is ridiculuous!! Our lawmakers are wasting time on a bill like this?!? It is obvious that if you eat at McDonalds often, you won't be healthy and you can become fat. Maybe there are stupid people out there, that are just looking for a way to make money.

  23. This bill seems ridiculous, but it is getting to the point where we need laws like this. People should never be able to sue and get money for getting fat. Resturaunts lots of times have nutritional information, and people need to read that and not eat it if it is to fattening. This law might prevent lawsuits like this, so I think it is a good idea.

  24. I think this is a good bill. People are responsible for what they eat, its their fault if they decide to eat unhealthy food. They shouldn't be able to sue the restaurants for their own eating habits. I hope the bill gets passed.
